Ilja Dragunov's Intense In-Ring Style Sparks Debate

Criticism Over Excessive Stiffness

Ilja Dragunov is known for his hard-hitting, physical wrestling style, which has led to accusations of being overly stiff with opponents. Some fans and critics argue that his strikes and submissions cross the line from realism into unnecessary danger, particularly in matches against wrestlers like Walter (Gunther) in NXT UK. While many praise his authenticity, others question whether his approach risks the safety of his opponents.

Backstage Reactions to His Aggressiveness

Reports have surfaced that some wrestlers have been hesitant to work with Dragunov due to his intensity. Though no major injuries have been directly blamed on him, his reputation for delivering stiff shots has caused backstage discussions about whether he should tone down his style for long-term sustainability in the industry.

Brutal Matches Draw Mixed Reactions

Dragunov's rivalry with Walter in NXT UK produced critically acclaimed matches, but their extreme physicality also sparked controversy. Their 2020 match, in particular, was praised for its storytelling but criticized for its sheer violence, with some fans arguing it bordered on excessive. While hardcore wrestling enthusiasts loved it, more casual viewers expressed discomfort with the level of punishment both men endured.

Did It Glorify Unnecessary Violence?

Some analysts debated whether their matches set a dangerous precedent, encouraging younger wrestlers to prioritize brutality over psychology. Dragunov defended the bouts as "art," but the debate over where to draw the line between compelling wrestling and reckless behavior remains unresolved.

Political Comments and Fan Backlash

Social Media Remarks Stir Controversy

Outside the ring, Dragunov has faced scrutiny for past social media activity, including posts that some interpreted as politically charged. While he has largely avoided public controversy in WWE, older comments resurfaced among fans, leading to heated discussions about his personal views. WWE has not addressed the matter publicly, and Dragunov has kept a low profile regarding politics in recent years.

Balancing Personal Beliefs and Public Image

As an international star, Dragunov's background has occasionally made him a lightning rod for debate, particularly given wrestling's global audience. While he remains focused on in-ring performance, some fans continue to scrutinize his past statements, creating an ongoing challenge for his public relations team.

Dragunov's hard-hitting, technical style has earned him a cult following, but some industry insiders question whether he can succeed in WWE's more mainstream environment. There have been debates over whether WWE should alter Dragunov's presentation to make him more marketable. While some fear dilution of his character, others argue that adaptation is necessary for long-term success.
