Controversial Moments:
Rey Mysterio's Mask: Tradition vs. Business
The Unmasking in WCW
One of Rey Mysterio's most controversial moments occurred in WCW in 1999 when he was forced to unmask after losing a match to Kevin Nash at SuperBrawl IX. In lucha libre, the mask is sacred, and Mysterio's unmasking was seen as a disrespect to Mexican wrestling tradition. Fans and fellow luchadores criticized WCW for prioritizing shock value over cultural respect.
WWE's Handling of the Mask
Even in WWE, Mysterio's mask became a point of contention. In 2014, WWE marketed a toy of Mysterio without his mask, which angered fans who felt the company was undermining his identity. Rey himself reportedly opposed the decision, reinforcing the importance of the mask to his legacy.
Backstage Heat with Eddie Guerrero
The Infamous Custody Match
At SummerSlam 2005, Rey Mysterio faced Eddie Guerrero in a "Custody of Dominik" ladder match, where the storyline involved Guerrero claiming to be Dominik's biological father. While the match was well-received, some backstage personnel felt the angle was too personal and exploitative, especially since it involved Mysterio's real-life son.
Real-Life Tensions
Reports suggested that Guerrero was unhappy with the storyline, leading to legitimate tension between the two. Though they remained professional, Guerrero's sudden passing later that year left the feud unresolved, adding to the controversy.
WWE's Wellness Policy Violation
2012 Suspension
In 2012, Rey Mysterio was suspended for 60 days for violating WWE's Wellness Policy. While WWE never disclosed the exact reason, rumors suggested it was related to performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension tarnished Mysterio's clean image and led to fan speculation about his longevity in wrestling.
Impact on His Career
The suspension came at a difficult time, as Mysterio was dealing with injuries. Some critics argued that WWE's strict policy unfairly targeted older wrestlers, while others saw it as a necessary measure. Mysterio later returned but never publicly addressed the suspension in detail.
Contract Disputes and WWE Departure
2015 Exit
Mysterio's departure from WWE in 2015 was marred by controversy. Reports indicated he was unhappy with his creative direction and wanted reduced dates due to injuries. WWE allegedly refused to release him, keeping him under contract while he sat out. This led to a public dispute, with Mysterio eventually leaving for other promotions like Lucha Underground.
Return and Fan Reactions
When Mysterio returned to WWE in 2018, some fans criticized him for "selling out," while others welcomed him back. The situation highlighted the often-contentious relationship between wrestlers and WWE's contractual control.
