The Controversial Finish
One of Tommaso Ciampa's most controversial moments came at NXT TakeOver: Phoenix in 2019 when he defeated Aleister Black to retain the NXT Championship. The match ended with a referee stoppage after Ciampa hit Black with a DDT on the exposed concrete floor. Many fans argued that the finish was anticlimactic and unfair to Black, who was on a dominant run at the time.
Fan Backlash
The decision to have Ciampa win via referee stoppage instead of a clean pinfall or submission led to significant backlash. Some viewers felt it protected Black but undermined Ciampa's credibility as a dominant heel champion. Others believed it was a creative way to extend their feud, though it left a portion of the audience dissatisfied.
The Infamous #DIY Breakup
Turning on Johnny Gargano
Ciampa's betrayal of Johnny Gargano, his longtime tag team partner in #DIY, remains one of the most shocking heel turns in NXT history. After losing a tag team match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in 2017, Ciampa attacked Gargano, cementing his status as a villain. The moment was controversial due to its emotional weight and the abrupt end of one of NXT's most beloved teams.
Real-Life Friendship vs. Storyline Heat
While the storyline was compelling, some fans questioned whether Ciampa's real-life friendship with Gargano made the angle uncomfortable. The two were close outside the ring, and Ciampa's vicious attack blurred the lines between fiction and reality, sparking debates about how far wrestling storylines should go.
Ciampa's Return from Injury in 2019
Skipping the NXT Crowd
After suffering a severe neck injury in 2019, Ciampa made his return on the main roster during an episode of Monday Night Raw, aligning with The Miz and John Morrison. Many fans were upset that he didn't return to NXT first, where he had built his legacy. The decision was seen as WWE prioritizing main roster shock value over NXT's storytelling continuity.
Short-Lived Main Roster Run
Ciampa's main roster run was short and underwhelming, leading to criticism that his return was mishandled. Some argued that WWE wasted his potential by not giving him a meaningful program, while others believed he should have stayed in NXT to continue his storied rivalries.
Ciampa's Feud with Bron Breakker
Passing the Torch or Buried Opportunity?
In 2022, Ciampa engaged in a feud with NXT's rising star Bron Breakker. While the matches were well-received, some fans felt Ciampa was used to put over Breakker without getting a proper send-off. Critics argued that Ciampa, a cornerstone of NXT's golden era, deserved a more significant final chapter before transitioning to the main roster.
Unresolved Storylines
The abrupt end to Ciampa's NXT tenure left unresolved threads, particularly with Johnny Gargano, who had departed for AEW. Many fans hoped for one last clash between the former #DIY partners, but it never materialized, leaving a sense of missed opportunity.

Tommaso Ciampa's Career Overview Entering 2025
Legacy and Reputation
By the start of the 2025 wrestling season, Tommaso Ciampa had solidified himself as one of the most respected veterans in professional wrestling. Known for his hard-hitting style, intense promos, and storytelling ability, Ciampa had built a reputation as a "workhorse" of the industry, particularly in WWE's NXT brand, where he became a two-time NXT Champion.
Recent Run in WWE (Pre-2025)
Before 2025, Ciampa had transitioned to WWE's main roster, where he experienced mixed success. While he remained a fan favorite, his booking was inconsistent, with flashes of brilliance (such as his rivalry with The Miz) but no sustained main-event push. Injuries also played a role in slowing his momentum, though he consistently delivered in-ring quality when healthy.
Ciampa's Position Entering 2025
Physical Condition and Longevity
At 39 years old in 2025, Ciampa was in the latter stages of his career but remained in excellent physical condition. His style had evolved to prioritize longevity, relying less on high-risk maneuvers and more on technical prowess and psychology. However, questions lingered about how much longer he could perform at an elite level.
Creative Direction and Potential
Ciampa entered 2025 as a reliable upper-midcard talent, often used to elevate younger stars while still being a credible threat in championship scenes. There was speculation about whether WWE would give him one final major push—possibly as a world title contender—or if he would transition into a mentorship role, similar to what veterans like Edge had done.
Fan and Industry Perception
Fans and critics alike viewed Ciampa as an underutilized asset. His matches were consistently praised, and his connection with the audience remained strong. Many hoped 2025 would be the year WWE fully capitalized on his talents, whether as a top heel, a grizzled veteran champion, or a gatekeeper for NXT call-ups.
